Although their unbeaten run finally came to an end, the Golden army still have their honour in-tact after a hard fought defeat against Shiplake 2nd XV. Under lights, as part of Merchant Taylors’ iconic rugby week, MTS were off to a thundering start. They say the best form of defence is attack – after receiving the kick off, tackle after tackle drove back Shiplake and Ludhra pounced on handling error within the first minute of the game, although unconverted.

Shiplake were quick to riposte with an almost identical try of their own off a spilled ball from MTS close to the try line. Although their effort was converted providing a narrow lead. MTS soon found their stride and the mighty B.S.G. carried maniacally through a helpless defence to once again put MTS in front (10-7). In a close game it wasn’t long before Niam Patel got his hands on the ball and finished another good score in the corner to grow the narrow lead. Only recently returning after injury, his dominant ball carrying and mazy runs will certainly have the 2nd XV coach looking on with interest. As a very physical game wore on, Shiplake themselves came back with a converted score going into the final 10 minutes of the first half 15-14. After a reshuffle due to injuries, Shiplake pounced again to finish a nail-biting first half 15-21 ahead with the game in the balance.

As the bench changes came in MTS lost structure but seemingly doubled-down in effort and resolve. Shiplake’s fourth and final try, although deserved, did little to hamper MTS energy. However, they were ultimately unable to convert this intensity into possession and forward momentum when it mattered. The high-intensity encounter at times got the better of MTS, but they can leave with their heads held high and much to learn. Honourable mentions must go to Saavan Patel, Niam Patel and Shrey Zaveri who were just 3 of 24 players who gave their all from start to finish.
